Scoliosis is a medical illness in which the spine curves sideways, forming an "S" or "C" shape, which in severe cases can cause posture problems, back pain, and difficulty breathing. It often appears during growth spurts in childhood or adolescence, but can also affect adults due to degeneration. Scoliosis causes include genetics, neuromuscular disorders, congenital spine defects, or remain idiopathic. Common scoliosis symptoms are uneven shoulders or hips, visible back curvature, pain, and fatigue. If untreated, scoliosis complications like progressive curvature, chronic pain, and lung or heart problems may occur.

In this video, Dr. U L Sandeep Varma, a leading spine specialist, explains the types of scoliosis, risk factors, and how scoliosis diagnosis is done through exams, X-rays, and MRI scans. He also covers scoliosis treatment options including observation, physical therapy, bracing and surgery for serious cases. Early detection and proper treatment help prevent complications and improve quality of life.
