World Obesity Day 4 March 2024 – Theme & Importance

Pace Hospitals

World Obesity Day has been observed globally on the 4th of March since 2020 to counter and end the growing global obesity crisis by promoting applied solutions in a real-world scenario, thus increasing the awareness of overweight and the complications it begets.

On this day, people from various international and local organisations all over the world unite to raise awareness about the growing obesity crisis and take collaborative action to correct the misconceptions around obesity, acknowledge the risk factors, and implement real-world solutions.

The incidence of obesity continues to surge, bringing the alarming problem to a routine norm. This sad situation must be reversed as with this trend, 270 crore adults worldwide will be overweight or obese by 2025.

The National Family Health Survey India-3 (NFHS-3) and (NFHS-4) reported the obesity epidemic in India. It showed that:

  • In 2005-06, 13% of women and nine percent of men of the age group of 15-49 years were overweight or obese, according to NFHS-3
  • In 2015-16, 21% of women and 19% were overweight or obese (BMI 25.0 kg/m2), according to NFHS-4 data.

Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of his height in metres (kg/m2). Overweight is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as having a BMI more than or equal to 25, and obesity as having a BMI more than or equal to 30.

World Obesity Day 2024 Theme

This year 2024, the World Obesity Day theme is “Let’s Talk About Obesity and... this theme emphasizes to encourage people to start conversations that address obesity from a cross-cutting perspective. The idea is to look at health, youth, and the world as a whole in order to find ways to combat obesity together.

Because only through communication, debate and broadcasting, norms can be changed and improving the health outcomes. Agreed that it won't be easy, but change comes only from the fringes of the norm, and these uncomfortable talks help to influence and mobilise policy efforts, dispel myths, and transform words into actions.

History of World Obesity Day (WOD)

In 2015, World Obesity Day was established on the 11th of October as an annual campaign to encourage and support practical activities to help attain and maintain a healthy weight, thus reversing worldwide obesity.

It was in 2019 that World Obesity Day commenced for the last time on the 11th of October, and since 2020, the new World Obesity Day date has been changed to the 4th of March.

Importance of World Obesity Day (WOD)

Despite the addition of obesity to the sixth International Classification of Diseases in 1948, its classification has not been entirely accepted even over seven decades later, explaining the general public's misconception about obesity.

The misconception has been so rooted that it has become the general norm. Although an increasing number of organisations and countries now recognise obesity as a disease, many still do not, hampering attempts to address the pandemic. Obesity is now one of the 21st century's most significant public health challenges, rising fastest in low- and middle-income countries.

World Obesity Day helps to recognise obesity as a disease which encourages people to seek medical care and shift the public discourse away from individual blame. These actions help prevent and manage obesity.

Tips to prevent obesity

  • Choosing healthier diet enriched with fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and protein.
  • Limiting unhealthy foods such as potatoes, sweets, red and processed meat.
  • Limiting unhealthy beverages (sugary drinks and sodas etc.)
  • Avoiding sedentary lifestyle, physical activity by limiting screen time and other "sit time".

Tips for Staying Healthy

Staying healthy involves a combination of good habits, lifestyle choices, and preventive measures. Here are some tips to help you maintain your health:

  • Having balanced diet
  • Staying hydrated
  • Exercising regularly
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Limiting alcohol and avoid smoking
  • Practicing good hygiene
  • Maintaining Body Mass Index(BMI)
