International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 1st of October every year that emphasises public awareness with respect to challenges and opportunities that are associated with ageing and mobilises community organisations, families and stakeholders to aid older people who are facing the challenges.
On this day, various international and national organisations join together to conduct events, national surveys, social campaigns and other awareness programmes and workshops to create awareness irrespective of the well-being and dignity of older individuals.
The elderly population is a valuable asset to any society. Ageing is a natural process that brings both opportunities and challenges. According to the 2011 Census, India is home to 10.4 crore individuals aged 60 and above, accounting for 8.6% of the total population. Among this demographic, females outnumber males.
The combination of increased life expectancy, the decline of joint family structures, and societal breakdowns have led to elderly individuals experiencing loneliness and imprudence. It is recommended that geriatrics maintain a healthy lifestyle by engaging in physical activity, consuming a nutritious diet, and avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other harmful substances. A positive mindset and mental well-being are essential for enhancing the quality of life in later years.
This year 2024, the International Day of Older Persons Theme is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide". This is a call to draw attention to the urgent need to increase training and educational opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology, address the global shortage of care workers, and recognise carers' contributions. The commemoration will also highlight the global impact of the shortage of care workers, and the importance of protecting the human rights of both caregivers and care recipients, promoting person-centred approaches to care that respect older people's dignity, beliefs, needs, and privacy, and advocating for the right to make decisions about their care and the quality of life.
Year by year, the themes for International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) are:
On December 14th, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP). This was preceded by the initiation of Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing (VIPAA), adopted by the World Assembly on Ageing (WAA) in 1982 and approved by the UN General Assembly later in the same year.
The UNIDOP 2024 lays out clear objectives to steer its mission:
Strengthening human rights protection: International Day of Older Persons aims to raise global awareness of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, mobilizing commitments to protect older individuals' rights for current and future generations.
Promoting intergenerational models: UNIDOP 2024 aims to promote knowledge exchange among different age groups, explore intergenerational models for human rights protection, and learn from successful practices to foster solidarity.
Integrating a life course approach: Governments and UN entities are urged to adopt a life course approach to human rights, involving active participation from civil society, institutions, and older persons.
As people age, it's essential to adjust their lifestyle for healthy aging. Consuming high-fiber foods, avoiding fried foods, drinking vitamin D-fortified drinks, and drinking hydrating fluids throughout the day are key to maintaining good health. One should consult doctor about bladder control, and safe physical activity. Choosing enjoyable activities and staying connected with family, friends, and community is important equally as much as personal care.
