CAC – A Complete Guide to Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment
Listen to
Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) refers to the accumulation of calcium deposits in the coronary artery walls, which provide the heart with blood. This calcification indicates atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries and may cause heart disease. CAC can be detected using a specialized CT scan known as a coronary calcium scan.
The presence and extent of CAC are strong indicators of future cardiovascular disease risk, even in individuals without symptoms. CAC is crucial in cardiac assessment, since higher calcium grades are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, heart failure, Cardiac arrest and other heart-related problems. In this episode of the Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) podcast, we will explore what CAC is, why it matters, how it’s detected, and what can be done to manage or reduce its impact on long-term heart health.
