Breast conserving surgery, also known as lumpectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove a breast tumour while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible. Unlike complete breast removal, this approach focuses on removing the cancerous lump along with a small margin of surrounding tissue to ensure safe clearance. Depending on the tumour's size, location, kind, breast size, and general health, it is typically taken into consideration for a small number of individuals with early-stage breast cancer.
The main goal of breast-conserving surgery is to treat breast cancer effectively while maintaining the natural shape and appearance of the Breast as much as possible. In many cases, lumpectomy may be followed by radiation therapy or other treatments based on the patient's diagnosis and cancer stage. Not every patient is suitable for this surgery, so proper evaluation by a breast cancer specialist or surgical oncologist is important before deciding on the treatment plan. Improving treatment options and results is largely dependent on early identification of breast cancer. Any breast lump, nipple changes, breast pain, skin dimpling, unusual discharge, or swelling in the underarm area should be evaluated without delay.
In this episode of the Breast Conserving Surgery Podcast, we will discuss Breast Conserving Surgery, including when lumpectomy is recommended, who may be eligible, how the procedure is performed, what to expect after surgery, possible risks, recovery, and the importance of follow-up care.
