AV Fistula Explained: How It Works, Benefits & Side Effects

Listen to

A surgically made connection between a vein and an artery that provides robust, consistent blood flow for hemodialysis is called an arteriovenous (AV) fistula. It is regarded as the most durable and secure option for individuals with chronic renal disease who need frequent dialysis. Unlike temporary catheters, an AV fistula lowers the risk of infection and supports effective blood filtration during treatment.

AV fistulas need time to mature before use, and early planning is key to successful dialysis outcomes. Many patients are unsure about when an AV fistula is necessary, how it is created, how to care for it, and how to recognise early warning signs of complications. Understanding these aspects helps protect access and prevent dialysis delays. In this episode of the AV fistula podcast, we discuss what an AV fistula is, who needs one, how the procedure is performed, recovery expectations, and daily care tips to maintain fistula health.
