What are types of dialysis
Kidneys do many important jobs essential for our body like removing waste products and extra water in the form of urine. They also help in controlling blood pressure, keeping bones healthy and making red blood cells. If kidney disease becomes severe and kidneys are not functioning properly to maintain the body, then you need either a dialysis or kidney transplant.
Dialysis is a treatment that does some kidney functions like filters and purifies the blood by removing waste and excess fluid from your body using a dialysis machine. This process helps to keep your electrolytes and fluids and in balance when your kidneys can’t perform these functions due to disease or injury. There are 2 types of dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, use different methods to filter blood.
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is a treatment to filter wastes and water from your blood, as your kidneys did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
Peritoneal dialysis (PD)
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a treatment that uses the lining of your abdomen, called your peritoneum, and a cleaning solution called dialysate to clean your blood. Dialysate absorbs waste and fluid from your blood, using your peritoneum as a filter.
