An umbilical hernia is a bulge or swelling in the belly button area. It occurs when part of the intestine or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Umbilical hernias are common in infants, but they can also occur in adults. In some cases, an umbilical hernia can become incarcerated. This means that the intestine or fatty tissue gets trapped in the hernia and cannot go back into the abdomen. This can be a serious condition and requires immediate medical attention.

An umbilical hernia is a bulge or swelling near the navel, caused by abdominal contents pushing through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Though common in infants, it can also occur in adults, particularly those with increased abdominal pressure due to factors like obesity or heavy lifting. In infants, hernias often resolve by age 2 or 3, but adults usually need medical intervention, especially if symptoms like discomfort or redness arise.

In this video, Dr. Suresh Kumar S, a surgical gastroenterologist, explains the causes and early signs of umbilical hernias, along with modern treatment options. He emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and prompt surgery to prevent complications and improve long-term outcomes, providing valuable insights for adults and parents of affected children.
