Vaginal Discharge - Types, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention
By PACE Hospitals September 25, 2023
Vaginal discharge is a common condition among women of childbearing age, affecting about one-third of all women and half of pregnant women, which requires care. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is characterised by changes in odour, colour, volume and consistency with symptoms such as dysuria, pelvic pain, itching, soreness or intermenstrual or post-coital bleeding. Unusual or abnormal vaginal discharge is usually an indication of infection or inflammation.

Vaginal discharge is a normal fluid produced by glands in the vagina and cervix to maintain hygiene and prevent infections. It can vary in color, consistency, and odor, with common types including clear, white, yellow, or green discharge. Abnormal symptoms such as foul odor, itching, or a change in texture may indicate infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and lab tests to identify the underlying cause. Preventive measures include maintaining good hygiene, wearing breathable underwear, and avoiding irritants like harsh soaps. Early detection and care are key to addressing concerns effectively.
