History of International Nurses Day (IND)

Every year on 12th May, the world celebrates International Nurses Day (IND), which honors the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), who is commonly considered the pioneer of modern nursing. The day honors the critical roles that nurses play in healthcare, society, and the world economy.

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, a representative of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, first proposed the idea of an international day to honor nurses. She made this suggestion to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1965, International Nurses Day was formally established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), although the proposal was not accepted at the time. Her legacy and the significance of the nursing profession globally were further cemented in 1974 when May 12th was selected as the fixed date to coincide with Florence Nightingale's birthday.

Every year, the ICN chooses a theme for International Nurses Day that centers on important problems impacting nurses and healthcare systems around the world. These themes seek to increase awareness, promote improved working conditions, and emphasize the critical role nurses play in providing high-quality healthcare and enhancing patient outcomes.

In 1982, the United States officially declared National Nurses Week to be observed from 12th May to coincide with International Nurses Day. With ceremonies, educational events, and advocacy campaigns that bring nurses, healthcare organizations, and communities together, IND has expanded over the years to become a global event.

The lamp has become the timeless emblem of International Nurses Day, influenced by Florence Nightingale's nightly rounds during the Crimean War. Many nations honor Nightingale's legacy and the commitment of nurses worldwide with the yearly "Lamp Lighting" ceremony.

Particularly in response to global health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, the ICN has underlined in recent years the value of funding nursing education, leadership, and well-being. Along with honoring nurses, the day also serves as a call to action for societies and governments to empower and support the nursing workforce to create a healthier future.
