History of International Nurses Day (IND)

Every year on 12th May, the world celebrates International Nurses Day (IND), which honors the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), who is commonly considered the pioneer of modern nursing. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, a representative of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, first proposed the idea of an international day to honor nurses. She made this suggestion to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1965, International Nurses Day was formally established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), although the proposal was not accepted at the time. Her legacy and the significance of the nursing profession globally were further cemented in 1974 when May 12th was selected as the fixed date to coincide with Florence Nightingale's birthday.
