World Stroke Day, 29 October 2025 - Theme, History and Importance

PACE Hospitals

Every year World Stroke Day is observed on October 29th to emphasize the serious nature and high rates of stroke. The day is also observed to raise awareness of the prevention and treatments of strokes.

Importance of World Stroke Day (WSD)

Worldwide, brain stroke is the second leading cause of death and third leading cause of disability and second leading cause of death. Every year, approximately 18 lakhs people suffer from stroke. It is noted that low and middle income countries, of which India is a part, have witnessed more than 100 percent increase in stroke whereas the developed countries have witnessed a drop of 42 percent.

The average incidence rate of stroke in India is 145 per one lakh (1,00,000) population. According to researchers, three Indians suffer a stroke every minute.

Although the elderly age group are more commonly affected by brain stroke, it also can occur to anyone at any age. Understanding the risk factors and recognizing the symptoms may help in preventing a brain stroke. Simultaneously receiving early diagnosis and treatment increases the chances for complete recovery.

History of World Stroke Day (WSD)

World stroke day was established on 29th October 2004 at World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada. Later in 2006, the day was proclaimed for public awareness. In 2006, World Stroke Organization was created with the merger of the World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society. Since then, World Stroke Organization (WSO) has been taking care of the management and advocacy of World stroke day (WSD) on different platforms.

The urge of World stroke day came into existence in the 1990s due to progressing stroke data worldwide. In 2010, World Stroke Organization (WSO) declared stroke a public health emergency to curb the trending mortality and disability due to the lack of awareness and proper accessibility of diagnosis and treatment to everyone. It is estimated that, in 2016, 11 crore 60 lakh potential years of life were lost to death and disability due to stroke (a measure of premature mortality).

When to Call Emergency?

TIME IS BRAIN. WITH A STROKE, TIME LOST IS BRAIN LOST.

Act FAST at the first sign of stroke. We can use letters F.A.S.T. to spot the signs of stroke and know when to call emergency. Here, F.A.S.T. stands for:

  1. Face (drooping of the face)
  2. Arms (arm weakness)
  3. Speech (slurred speech)
  4. Time (time to call for an emergency)

Steps to Prevent Brain Stroke

Brain stroke can be prevented by following these steps:

  • Maintaining healthy lifestyle.
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid alcohol intake
  • Regular physical activity
  • Dietary modifications - limiting sodium, meats and sweets.
  • Regular health checkups

Hence it is important to identify stroke symptoms as early as possible and act FAST as millions of brain cells die every second following stroke. Early intervention helps in preventing long-term disability associated with stroke. It’s high time to make people aware about the condition, the right course of treatment and preventive measures that will help them deal with the disease.
